Refill Guide

Choosing the correct refill for your pen is important, but sometimes it hard to know which is right. Some brands have specific sizes and profiles to fit their pens, some take standard sizes, some brands even do refills designed for other brands. Pen Heaven have come up with this easy to use refill guide to help you navigate your way through the many options available.

Generally if you want a refill for your pen look for a branded refill that matches your pen and type. If you can't find a branded refill this is usually because the manufacturer does not make specialised refills and your pen will take the International Standard for that writing type.

Compatible with Coles, Diplomat, Faber-Castell, Graf von Faber-Castell, Laban, Ohto, Online, Otto Hutt, Platinum, Sheaffer, Waterman, Worther, Yard-o-Led.

The Euro-format rollerball refill is similar to a standard in that a lot of brands use a euro-format. The only issue is that although very similar and most can be used across the different brands they vary slightly. Some have a wider tip. Some have a small 'step' where the tip section meets the barrel.

All this means that if you have a pen which suits Euro-format rollerball refills it is best to use the manufacturer's own refills. That said if you're feeling risky there's plenty of options to choose from which will most likely fit.

Standard multifunction pen refills

Compatible with Caran d'Ache, Cross, Laban, Lamy, Ohto, Online, Parker, Platinum, Worther, Yard-o-Led.

Known as the 'D1' within the pen industry, this is the industry standard size for multi-function and mini pens. These refills are usually made of metal and have a hollow end. Generally these are miniaturised ballpoint refills, utilising oil based ink.

As lots of brands manufacture their own there is a wide range to choose from and even some great colours and styles; like the Lamy M55 Marker Refill, which works like a highlighter.

Many multi-function refills have a fine writing point as they have limited ink capacity and this prolongs the refill life, but other sizes are available.

I have just purchased the Cross X Series in the rollerball and I am having huge issues with it, the ink is not consistent and keeps blotting. It has already been replaced twice in less than a week. Is this a standard issue with the cross rollerball refill and is it possible to get a ballpoint to replace it? Love the pen just can't rely on the refill.

      Hi,

We usually hear great feedback on the quality of the Cross rollerball refills and the smoothness of the writing style and ink flow. In fact Cross is the go-to brand of choice for a number of our staff especially for this reason.

If you are having continued issues with your pen, we would advise going back to the retailer you bought it from.

We don't stock the Waterman Plaque pen so it's hard for us to be certain. However, all the current ranges of Waterman pens which we stock use one specific type of ballpoint refill. It is possible the plaque would use these too.

These can be found using the link below:

      Hi Paul,

The Sheaffer Slim has the following dimensions:

End to end (uncapped) - 111mm
      Barrel - 90mm
Stepped tip section - 21mm (5mm larger step and 16mm thinner part to tip)

I hope this is clear and helps.

Hi. I have a 1970s vintage 14K gold medici diamond Shaeffer Roller Ball pen for which I am seeking a refill. Neither classic nor slim refill versions fit - both are right length but are too wide at the nib tip and cannot pass through the end section of the pen. Following research, I have only been able to find the fountain pen version of this model online and it may be mine is now the only roller ball pen of this model in exxistence?
Have Schaeffer changed their refill dimensions since early 70s or can you advise an alternative third party substitute. Can send you a photo if it would be of any use.
    Many Thanks, Art W

Pen Heaven are a retailer of modern pen ranges only and we don’t stock spare parts. You’d need to go to a vintage pen specialist or directly to Sheaffer for further information on historical models and parts.

    Hello,

I got a lovely CROSS pen for Christmas. I believe it is a Classic Century rollerball pen. The problem is that the tip is too wide for me and I almost can't read my own writing. Is there a suitable fine tip refill that would work with this type of pen? I don't mind if it comes in black or blue colour. Many thanks
    Kind regards

Unfortunately Cross do not make a fine tip version of the refill for this pen. When looking at other brands refills, it really depends on if you have the old or the new Cross Classic Century Rollerball model.

If the diameter of the barrel is ~8mm, this is the older model and we do not know of any compatible refills which are a finer writing point.

If the diameter of the barrel is ~10mm, this is the newer model. Whilst we could not find an exact match compatibility wise, we did find 1 refill in our collection which when inserted into this pen protrudes enough to write with, but it does look a little odd. This is the Faber-Castell Fineliner Refill: https://www.penheaven.co.uk/faber-castell-fineliner-refill. This has an extra fine 0.4mm fibre tip.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I just measured it and when measured at the "front" black part of the pen the diameter is 8mm and on the "back" silver side it is 9mm. Does that mean this might be the older version?

If I am unlucky and there are no fine refills for this pen would you be able to recommend a replacement pen or point me in the right direction how to filter your website correctly. I am after a rollerball pen in silver colour with fine tip.

Thank you for your answer in advance.

        Kind regards

    Hi,
I have a brushed steel Fountain pen made by Taylor Pen Co, Goring on Thames, Reading. It's a lovely pen and would love to use it but it didn't have a refill fitted when I received it. I have tried the std international refill, but the inside diameter of the refill is too small. The inside diameter of the grip section is around 5.5mm and the outside diameter of the feed is around 3.1mm. Would the Lamy refill be the correct type? Hoping you may be able to help out.

    Thanks.

Unfortunately, we've never heard of Taylor Pen Co pens, so we'd be unable to recommend a suitable refill. The dimensions on our refill finder are as accurate as possible and should help you identify a suitable match should we stock one. However, ultimately, you may need to just bite the bullet and take a risk on the refills fitting.

I am looking for a ballpoint refill compatible to a Sailor 83-09 (Fine), which is metal 90mm long and 3mm in diameter (ink and ballpoint tip) with a crimp at 32-34mm. The very thin stainless steel pen was manufactured in Japan and sold by Shaeffer in the U.S. in the early 1980's. A bit hard to find a comparable refill. I appreciate any advice you may offer. As you say the refill looks like a small version of the Cross ballpoint refill, there must be a plastic top with a screw thread at the opposite end to the writing tip. Can you remove the plastic screw section? If this removes, it is likely that you need a multifunction ballpoint refill which you would place this plastic top on the end of.

      https://www.penheaven.co.uk/refills-ink#sqr:(q[multifunction%20refill])

If this does not work, then we would be unable to advise as we do not stock any refills which would be similar to what you are requiring.

We are unaware of any alternative manufacturer refills which would fit the Parker rollerball pens. We always recommend using branded refills with your pens and we doubt that if any alternative manufacturers did make compatible refills that they would have a finer point than the Parker one does.

The difference is essentially which Sheaffer ballpoint the refill will fit and be compatible with.

The 'K' style is the standard Sheaffer refill and is compatible with most Sheaffer ranges.

The 'T' style is a G2 or 'Parker Style' refill. This is compatible with the ballpoint pens in the Sheaffer Taranis, Sagaris and Stylus Collection ranges, as well as many other manufacturers ballpoint pens eg. Parker and Faber-Castell.

Does anyone make ballpoint refills that match Cross Selectip rollerball refills, if so, in what ink colours?

Cross do a Jumbo Ballpoint Refill which is designed to fit in any Cross pen which is compatible with Cross Selectip Rollerball Refills. These are available in black and blue.

This is a new refill to the market and Pen Heaven do not stock this at the present time. We are looking into stocking this in the future, but for now you can buy them direct from Cross.

I am looking for a refill having dimensions 98 x 3 x 22. Site says it found one match for the length but I do not see a way to display it. Help!

      Thanks for your comment.

The Standard International Ballpoint Refill (also known as 'Parker style' or 'G2') has a length of 98mm. You can find this by using the following link: https://www.penheaven.co.uk/parker-ballpoint-refill-medium-point

However, this refill has a diameter of almost 6mm, so is quite a lot wider than the refill dimensions you have given. As such, this would probably not be a match to the refill you are looking for. Unfortunately Pen Heaven does not stock any other refills that would be a closer match to the dimensions required, and we can only advise on products which we retail.

We wish you luck in your search for an appropriate refill.

Hi Marcus, Thanks for your query.

If the K refill does not fit you could try the Sheaffer 'T' style (more commonly known as 'Parker' style) as this is compatible with some Sheaffer ballpoint pens. Please see here: https://www.penheaven.co.uk/parker-ballpoint-refill-medium-point
Alternatively, the Japanese made pens were sometimes made in conjunction with Sailor pens, so a Sailor branded refill may fit.
Please bear in mind that as all Sheaffer pens made and branded in Japan are now vintage or discontinued, we can make suggestions based based on modern pen refills, but we cannot guarantee that these will fit.

Hello, I'm trying to find a refill for my silver Hermes pen (mini). A Waterman Titane fits it, but I can't find more for sale anywhere, a refill of nearly 4 inches long. Can you recommend? Thank you.

We're really not sure about the refill because it's not a pen that we stock.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! What a GREAT identifier! I am VERY VERY IMPRESSED! I had a beautiful pen with a totally white refill inside that I couldn't identify. I had no thought it might be a Parker because it was so non-descript/knockoff! Your identifier found its match!

You have made me VERY happy! I'll be back for sure!

        Thanks a million!

        :)--Darlene
