Harmonising Your Home Office
Harmonising Your Home Office
If you’ve ever felt the sudden urge to meticulously organise your desk draws as a deadline approaches, you’ll understand how maintaining a neat and tidy workplace can boost your productivity and reduce distractions. While many organisations have a ‘clear desk policy’ for this very reason, if you’re working from home it can be tempting to regard your workspace as a private place, and quickly let things slide.
It doesn’t matter if your home office is a portion of a communal table, or a dedicated room. By making it a beautiful and well-organised spot, you’ll instantly boost the quality and efficiency of your work, and feel positive about facing the day.
More than 4 million people in the UK (13% of the workforce) are now working from home full-time, and that number soars when you take into account occasional remote workers. That’s why we’re spreading the word about Organise Your Home Office Day on March 12th. Plan ahead and schedule in a couple of hours to sort, tidy and clean your space, and you’ll be able to spend the rest of 2019 focusing on what really matters.

Declutter
No matter how useful each item you own may be, they become collectively useless if you’re drowning in stuff. By spending even a couple of minutes hunting for a pencil, you’re draining your energy before you’ve even started working.
Begin by going through your piles and getting rid of everything old, broken and unused. Make sure you’re only keeping one of everything you really need within easy reach, and either throw, donate, or store the rest elsewhere.
Trust that choosing one well-chosen, faithful tool - like this perfect mechanical pencil (with its own stand!) - will bring you more pleasure in the long term than a drawer full of old freebie pens.
Organise
Once you’ve narrowed down your favourite items, it’s time to make sure you can always find them. The simplest way to do this is to invest in some desk tidies and trays. If you’re feeling motivated, think about putting up a pin or magnetic board to keep notes off your desk, and clearly label and alphabetise your files.
Organising your space can be so satisfying that you may feel like you want to start getting the rest of your life in shape. A classic filofax is a reliable, user-friendly way to stay on top of your schedule, and adds a distinguished touch to any desk.
Optimise
It’s not just about decluttering; it’s also about making the most of your surroundings. Take inspiration from Feng Shui - the ancient art of balance - to promote positive energy and a sense of calm.
Think about arranging your few, chosen items in a way that is both useful and aesthetically pleasing. Harmoniously designed items, like a sleek aluminium pen, make a stunning impact on a clear surface, and feel great to use.
Personalise
Finally, add the finishing touches. You want your home office to be warm, personal and welcoming. Add a few choice knick-knacks and photos that make you feel happy, and remind you why you go to work in the first place.
Whatever your interests, you can find a way to add subtle, meaningful touches to your environment. Add some life to your desk with a pewter ink bottle in the shape of your favourite animal, or gift one to a friend who is also starting out on their home office journey.
