Shades of Red
Shades of Red
Beyond black and white, red is the first colour which humans can perceive. It’s the colour of our hearts and blood and rouses strong feelings in all of us, long being the symbolic colour of power, love, strength and beauty.
We thought there is no better time of year than in the run up to Valentine’s Day to explore this powerful colour and find a shade of red which will suit you.
Audrey Hepburn once said “There is a shade of red for every woman.” – here at Pen Heaven we believe there is a shade of red for EVERYONE.
Cardinal Red
Taking its name from the colour of the cassocks worn by Cardinals, this red is very bright and saturated showing the power of the clergy whom wore it and their affinity with God. Only the most powerful (read wealthiest) could obtain the dye as it was made using tiny beetles which had to be gathered in numbers and then dried, crushed and boiled in a lengthy and difficult process. The Cardinal bird is also named after the Roman Catholic clergymen.

Coral Red
A less saturated red, this colour brings in orangey tones giving it a fresh and lively appearance. Named for the sea creature which was often made into lavish jewellery, coral red has long been associated with exotic travel and exploration.
Garnet Red
A dark red tone with hints of purple, the colour garnet represents the average hue of a garnet gemstone. Garnets are said to offer protection against disasters and evil spirits, as well as providing self-confidence and better relationships, both with lovers and friends, to the wearer.
