Expressions of Love

Ahh, love. In the history of humanity nothing else has inspired more art, writing, music or poetry than love. Acts of incredible bravery, painful sacrifice and overwhelming beauty are carried out in the name of love every single day. It can make people act in ways they would otherwise never be able to - for better or worse! - and is the only reason any of us are even alive today. Put simply: to love is to be human, and it may well be the very best thing we do.

Love is also an immensely broad and complex thing, and there are many different kinds of love that we all experience. We love our parents, we love our partners, we love our friends, and we love our children. We love people we see every day and we love those we haven’t seen in years. We feel love for our animals and our pets, and in some circumstances we may even feel compelled by feelings of love for people we’ve never met. The ways we express this love vary too - we may share a hug, a kiss or a smile; we may show our love through acts of care, kindness or support; or we may feel a love that we’ve never quite found the words for.

It can, after all, be a challenge to express our emotions, or to properly convey how we feel with language. But with a bit of time, patience and soul-searching, a well-written love letter is an incredibly powerful and cathartic experience for both the writer and the reader. This Valentine’s Day we urge you to try it yourself and see if you can’t make your loved one’s day.

Whether it’s your chosen partner, your family or your best friend, everyone deserves to be told how much they are cared for and appreciated. Be sure to take your time with this - find a quiet space free from external distractions and give yourself plenty of time to express yourself. There is no lower or upper word limit to stick to so don’t feel any pressure to be concise or overly expansive - say exactly what you think and feel, no more and no less.
