Buyers Guide > Solid Silver Pens
A solid silver pen makes a special gift due to its high perceived value. A majority of the well known pen brands manufacture solid silver pens, although they tend to be very expensive. On the other hand, some lesser known brands produce some beautiful silver pens at reasonable prices, such as Laban.
Silver pens are made from 925silver, which is the same type of silver as most jewellery. Pure silver can easily damage because it is very malleable (and softens over time), so other metals are added to strengthen the silver. The result is a combined silver and metal alloy which is more resistant to damage and scratching. 925 silver is a combination of 92.5% silver and usually 7.5% copper. This allows intricate designs to be created on the pen that will stay in place. Pen nibs are never made from solid silver, but rather stainless steel or gold.
The hallmark is an assurance that the silver is of the highest quality. Silver pens are Platinum or rhodium plated to prevent tarnishing and scratches, and enhance the shine. We stock solid silver pens by Laban and Graf von Faber-Castell.
