History of Pelikan Pens

Established in 1832 when chemist Hornemann founded his own ink factory in Hoanover, Germany. Initially the ink was prepared on a farmyard, but in 1842 they moved to a larger scale factory. Guenther Wagner took over the company in 1871 and established his family emblem as the company logo, the Pelikan. This was one of the first German trademarks ever. In 1896 Pelikan started to manufacture Indian Ink, and in 1901 began the famous 4001 ink series.

In 1929 the Pelikan fountain pen was born. It was well know for its trademark green shaft, technically innovate ink flow and transparent window. The differential piston mechanism was a revelation of its time. In 1934 Pelikan Pelikan produced a cheaper version of their fountain pen, known as the 100 series under the product description Rappen. In 1950, as Germany recovered from the war, Pelikan introduced the 400 which was recognized by its green and black striped shaft. This model became the most popular fountain pen in its price range.

In 1960 the school fountain pen was introduced called the ‘Pelikano’. Handwriting experts helped deleveloped the pen, which used ergonomic technology to make it easier to use. It also benefited from an ink cartridge filling system, making it the most popular school pen. In 1974 Pelikan demonstrated its commitment to the education of good handwriting, by producing material on simplified handwriting for beginners. In 1993 Pelikan released its first limited edition pen called the ‘Blue Ocean’. It was made from transparent blue resin and 5000 were produced. In 1996 the 16th Commonwealth games took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Pelikan released the Kuala Lumpur pen to commemorate this
