Buyers Guide > Engraved Pens - A Guide to Personalising Your Pen
An Engraved pen make a superb gift. Engraving allows you to personalise your chosen pen, making a gift meaningful and special. Engraved pens are ideal for occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, valentines, father’s/mother’s day, retirement, or just to say you care. Pens are ideal to personalise becuase they have a ready made space for an engraving, and the recipient will see the message everyime they use it.

How different surfaces engrave is an important factor when purchasing an engraved pen. Pens with a lacquer finish have a colour varnish that coats the main body of the pen (usually in brass). When such a pen is engraved, the lacquer is chiselled away to reveal the surface underneath. The resultant engraving is usually in a brass/gold colour or silver colour, and stands out very clearly. Stainless steel, solid silver and chrome pens engrave directly into the surface of the pen, producing a subtle but very tasteful engraving.

Surfaces that cannot be engraved include uneven surfaces and leather. We do not recommend that pens with a distinct pattern be engraved because the engraving will clash and not stand out.
The location of the engraving can vary from pen to pen, although there are some clear cut rules. Ballpoint pens are engraved on the front section, but positioned so the writers hand does not cover the message. Fountain pens are engraved on the barrel and the message reads correctly in the writing position. In some cases the message is engraved on the cap, because the barrel is unsuitable.
The font size of the message is dependant on the size of the pen. If the pen is chunky then the pen suits a bigger font, whilst slimline pens suit a smaller font. If the message is very long we will need to adjust the font size so that it fits onto the pen.
