History of Faber-Castell
In 1761, Kaspar Faber manufactured the first pencil. In 1840 Lothar von Faber branded the pencils with his name, and established standards for length, diamater and lead density. The Faber pencil consequently became a quality product that was the world's first branded writing instrument. In 1849 the first foreign branches were opened in New York, London and Paris.
The company name of Faber-Castell that we know today came into being in 1898 when Baroness Ottilie von Faber married Count Alexander zu Castell-Rudenhausen. The infamous Castell 9000 was created in 1905 , which achieved worldwide success due to its unique design. From 1928, Count Roland von Faber-Castell took over the company. He acquired a majority share in Lapis Johann Faber, which is today the largest factory for graphite and colour pencils in the world. Subsequently, Faber-Castell grew to be the world's leading producer of wood-cased graphite and colour pencils.
