Coles Calligraphy offers traditional writing sets that evoke the elegant handwriting practices of old. The range includes feather quill pens, Venetian glass pens, wax and seals. Feather quills were used as ink pens before the invention of the fountain pen, and were most commonly used during Medieval times. A quill was used in 1787 to write and sign the constitution of the USA. Venetian glass pens are made from Murano glass, made on the Island of Murano next door to Venice. All sets are exquisitely packaged.

About Calligraphy
Calligraphy is as old as the art of writing itself, and continues to flourish today. A contemporary definition of Calligraphy is ‘the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skilful manner’. Calligraphy is used today in the form of wedding and event invitations, typography, original hand-lettered logo design, religious art, commissioned calligraphic art, cut stone inscriptions and memorial documents. Modern calligraphy ranges from functional hand lettered inscriptions and designs to abstract fine art. Calligraphy characters tend to follow technical guidelines but are also fluid and spontaneous, improvised at the moment of writing. Click here to read about the History of Calligraphy.
