History of Sheaffer Pens
The Sheaffer Pen Company was founded in 1912 by Walter A. Sheaffer in Iowa, USA. He designed and patented a pen filling apparatus that used levers in 1908, and he continued to develop more filler systems for his fountain pens. Both the Touchdown Filler (1949) and the Snorkel extending filler tube (1952) permitted bottled ink to be used without dismantling the pen.
In 1922 Sheaffer produced its own range of bottled inks, called ‘Skrip Ink’. It was intended to flow more smoothly and blend more easily than other inks. In 1924 Sheaffer introduced coloured pens for the first time, as previously most fountain pens were black hard rubber. The introduction of coloured pens was very popular and by 1925 Sheaffer had 25% of the US pen market. It was at this time that Sheaffer introduced its trademark white dot.
